Professor John Dupré Lecture Four: Personal Identity
Переглядів 4193 місяці тому
Whatever the problems in saying what the boundaries of the organism might be at a time, we cannot avoid a question about the persistence of the organism through time. What makes me the same person as a child who existed several decades ago? Professor Dupré's starting point for addressing this question is the position that has recently been defended as animalism: the continuity of a person over ...
Professor John Dupré Lecture Six: Free Will
Переглядів 1703 місяці тому
In his final lecture, Professor Dupré turns to the human individual. If, as argued in the first lecture, humans are open-ended processes, does this offer a solution to the age-old problem of free will? Professor Dupré argues that, with important qualifications, it does. The most important qualification is that while humans do indeed have powers to make a difference in the world, these powers do...
Professor John Dupré Lecture Five: Human Nature and Human Kinds
Переглядів 1823 місяці тому
While no one doubts that all humans are members of a single species, is there anything to human nature beyond belonging to this particular lineage. While there are, of course, many statistical facts about humans, Professor Dupré argues for scepticism about any stronger understanding of human nature. Fortunately, while there is no essence defining the human, the evolutionary history of humans ha...
Professor John Dupré Lecture One: Why life is all process
Переглядів 7853 місяці тому
In this lecture, Professor Dupré will introduce the view of life as process that he has been defending for the last 15 years. He will explain the difference between a world of process and a world of things (or, as philosophers have sometimes called them, substances), and show how the former fits better with our current understanding of the history of the universe. Professor Dupré will then expl...
Professor John Dupré Lecture Three: Humans and their Fellow Travellers
Переглядів 1963 місяці тому
In this lecture, Professor Dupré takes up the quite recent realisation that we are not composed entirely or even mostly of “human” cells, but are hosts to trillions of microbial passengers. How should we think of these? Are they transitory passengers, or are they integral parts of us? If the latter, what does this say about how we determine the boundaries of the individual? Might this problem e...
Professor John Dupré Lecture Two: Evolution
Переглядів 2523 місяці тому
In the second lecture, Professor Dupré considers some implications of a process philosophy for our theory of evolution. Starting with the entities that evolve, lineages, he will explain what these are and why they should be seen as long-lasting processes. Professor Dupré will then use this insight as a perspective to look at various factors in evolution. He will touch on the current debate betw...

One of my favorite man on this planet. love you Shahrukh!❤
If he is dead, then now he found out that there is a God after all. Hope he accepted Jesus. Don't worry, we will find this ourselves soon since 100% of us die
Didn’t think this would include the history of Carnegie !
Thank you. Does independent learning also carry over into post-graduate level programs?
Xxx lasing kamang
I just wish Scots weren’t so rude 😅 the men at least
Dont become philosopher before you become rich
God richly bless and Dorcas for the love you and the other bridesmaids showed to Marie. I pray the Good Lord multiply it by 2 for you guys when it's your turn. Pls keep praying for your friend.
Standing salute 🫡 Excellent 👌 talk 🙏🇵🇰🔥🇬🇧
Asalam o laikum Good morning 🎉
Problem is he worked himself into a fairly inflexible meme that attempts to explain all evolution through the propagation of memes. The irony is not lost, even though he is. RIP.
Well spoken. People speak like humanity is an unknown force in the universe we cant predict. Like we have no idea what fuels people to take up faith and in belief in things we know dont exist. Its similar to fighting terrorism. We talk like its a war to win. Everyone wants to go home happy and healthy at the end of the day. The more we have safety and security the less are radicalized. Instead we engage in violence and wonder why people radicalize. Religion works the same way. Paget and Freud recognized a century and a half ago that trauma is pandemic. Not a rare occurrance but rampant. People turn to religion in fear. Sometimes in imminent physical fear but mostly from deep pschological unrrsolved trauma. Religious trauma. Trauma from neglect. Trauma from abuse. We dont know how to deal with this fear. We turn to whatever makes us feel better. Religion has learned to use all kinds to tricks to make it seem real and worthy of our time. It leads us to abandon humanity for fictitious rewards or punishments. The northern European countries have taught us that if you have healthcare and invest in people the incidence of faith goes down and people are happier. One day the religious will be the odd person who refuses help for thier traumas. We must focus on trauma, religious indoctirnation and early childhood trauma. The data is there. No one is putting it together.
Do yourself a favour: Do NOT study physics at the University of Edinburgh. Seriously.
Business Acumen!
So on top of everything else he’s an amazing public speaker
Greetings Dr. Steven Pinker, You have been a most influential bastion for me over the past 13 years. You have helped me put things in a perspective that encourages more thoughtful action and has granted me much more wisdom than otherwise. You are one of the best of us in this world! Best regards, Emmanuel

I used to think religion was just going to fade out. Long after I’m dead, but oh well.. I see now we have to understand it out of existence. I hope the scholars and researchers take up this project suggested by Dennett
I noticed how his ideas can also explain cults, politics and advertising.
Impossible
Rest in peace 🕊️❤
What's the deal with @victoriousvegan? This is such a good lecture and its only comments come from a non-related ideological spammer who doesn't even try to connect any quotations about animal rights to Eliot's work. Get a life. Start with Middlemarch.
Love you Srk boss ❤❤❤❤❤
Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩♥️♥️♥️❣️
I got first offer letter, unconditional offer letter, but unfortunately, I have no english proficiency certificate like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or any other. I'm from India, last year student of Bachelor of Pharmacy. I don't come under exemption criteria, because my university is not listed there. Is there any way to get admission? Please help me, about fully funded scholarships for Masters at UoE. Please help me, I need help.
Rip legend 💖
R.I.P
I know people who owned a steak house and their children died of CJD somehow the parents were carriers How is that?
That was fantastic! I'm Brazil, doing a master's seminar about Paget's disease, and this presentation helped me a lot! Thank you to Prof. Stuart Ralston, you are brilliant!
I loved Dr. Daniel Dennett, very sad to hear about his passing, I've would have loved to meet him, he was my absolute favorite, an intellectual giant, a legend, true sage, heard he was also very kind gentle person, huge loss to civilization, I will watch tons of his lectures in the next few days/weeks in his memory, I was distraught to know that my favorite philosopher/intellectual passed away, got some consolation that his lectures will be online and I can watch them over and over again 57:16
His words got diamond shine impact

The Precession of the Equinoxes determine intelligence and consequently the intelligence of humans in each era and consequently their behavior. We are on the ascent from the last Dark Age to an age when electricities and forces will be fully discovered and understood. The Great Year is a good film that explains this. It is likely that Prof. Pinker has not seen it.
read and said but yes he is inspiration
RIP
❤❤❤❤❤❤Always ❤❤❤❤❤
Dare he said it, but isn’t it a little like Jesus to explain how the Government controls the whole church from the top of Mario’s pipeline to the central government admin?
Please we NEED this ASAP! I live with damaged skin and facial injury scar, its so ugly!
Rest in power, Danny Dennett, master of irony. He made the best Santa Claus at the infamous Tufts Christmas parties.
Apart from actor, he is himself a sea of knowledge
RIP sir
PIR Daniel Dennett, hopefully he repented and believed before he died, or else now he knows how wrong he was.
